Just before he died, Umar ibn al Khattab nominated six companions of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.), to choose from amongst themselves his successor. The six were Abdur Rahman bin Awf, Usman bin Affan, Ali bin Abu Talib (a.s.), Sa’d bin Abi Waqqaas, Zubayr bin Awam and Talha bin Ubaidullah.
